Fenwicks Scrub Flora Reserve
A 110-hectare warm temperate rainforest reserve on Australia’s Mid North Coast, where towering sassafras and coachwood create a dense canopy high on the Great Dividing Range.

Fenwicks Scrub Flora Reserve protects an intact patch of warm temperate rainforest between 990 and 1,100 metres elevation west of Port Macquarie. The 20-metre canopy is dominated almost entirely by sassafras and coachwood, two species that thrive in this cool, moist microclimate. The reserve forms part of a much larger World Heritage-listed rainforest system spanning the New South Wales–Queensland border.
History
The reserve was formally inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994, as one of fifty separate protected reserves and national parks comprising the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia. This broader designation recognised the ecological significance of rainforest fragments stretching from Newcastle to Brisbane. The entire Gondwana Rainforests complex was subsequently listed on the Australian National Heritage List on 21 May 2007.

The reserve’s defining feature is its uniform canopy layer. At approximately 20 metres tall, it consists of 98% sassafras and coachwood trees—a remarkable homogeneity that reflects the specific soil and climate conditions of this high-altitude rainforest. The dense understory and high rainfall maintain the conditions these species require.

Fenwicks Scrub represents a living example of warm temperate rainforest, an ecosystem type now restricted to scattered locations across eastern Australia.
