Ambasador Hotel, Bucharest
Thirteen storeys of stepped Art Déco on Bulevardul Magheru: Arghir Culina’s Ambasador opened in May 1939, months before the world it was built for disappeared.
At a glance
The Ambasador is the Art Déco high-rise of Bulevardul Magheru: a stepped, symmetrical tower designed by Arghir Culina and built 1937-1939. Inaugurated on 4 May 1939, it has operated as a hotel ever since and is listed as a historic monument (LMI B-II-m-B-19115).
History
Culina had already shaped Bucharest’s hotel scene with earlier commissions when he received the Ambasador. The building answered the boulevard’s new scale — elevators, steel and reinforced concrete allowed hotels to grow upward — and its opening months before the Second World War made it one of the last monuments of interwar optimism.
What you see
A central tower rising in setbacks, flanked by lower wings that hold the street line: the classic Déco silhouette, rendered in pale plaster. Vertical window strips accentuate the height; the crowning storeys step back twice before the roofline. The historic photograph by Willy Pragher shows the facade essentially as it still appears.
Cultural significance
Together with the ARO Building a few steps away, the Ambasador defines the two faces of Bucharest’s interwar boulevard: Creangă’s horizontal modernism and Culina’s vertical Déco. It remains a working hotel, which makes it one of the few monuments of the period you can sleep in.
