History
The beguinage was founded to house beguines, religious women who chose a communal but non-monastic life. By the early 20th century, this way of living had faded. In 1927, canon Hoornaert established a Benedictine convent here. That same year, the western houses were reshaped and enlarged to create the Monasterium De Wijngaard, a priory of Benedictine nuns.

The compound retains its characteristic enclosed layout, with houses arranged around quiet courtyards. Early 20th-century Benedictine additions reflect the practical needs of monastic life, while older fabric preserves the intimate scale of beguine dwellings.
Cultural significance
Ten Wijngaerde is the last beguinage remaining in Bruges and one of the few active examples in Belgium. It documents a medieval women’s movement that flourished in Northern Europe, where piety and independence coexisted outside formal monastic structures. The site bridges that history with modern contemplative practice.
