History
The hall was constructed during the height of the Renaissance, when Flemish cities sought to assert their independence and prosperity through bold architecture. The 1999 inscription on UNESCO’s World Heritage List recognized the building’s testimony to the growing influence of civil authority and its symbolic role in advancing civil liberties across the region.
What you see
The structure rises in three stories, with the belfry tower crowning the corner. Two Tuscan columns support the tower’s lower section, where round arches enclose a public platform—the traditional space for civic proclamations. Above, step gables punctuate the roofline, their louvered openings designed to project the bell’s sound across the town. Inside, the Flemish dining hall preserves its original character: an elegant mantelpiece, oaken ceiling, and leaded windows bearing the coats of arms of nobles and clergy—a material record of the hall’s social authority.
