The cathedral’s two spires—completed only in the 19th century—crown a structure that took over 300 years to finish.
History
The site’s first cathedral, built in the Romanesque style, was destroyed by fires in 1258 and 1310. Construction of the present cathedral began in the 13th century and continued into the early 17th. The final spires were not completed until the 1800s. In the 19th century, architect Émile Boeswildwald—a pupil of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and architect to the French government—led major restoration and refurbishment work that preserved the structure for future generations.

As part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France, the cathedral was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998, recognizing its role in centuries of pilgrimage and its architectural importance to European Gothic heritage.
