History
The site was predated by hilltop settlements and the primitive Roman settlement of Complutum on the left bank of the Henares. A new Roman settlement was founded in the mid 1st century on the right bank, becoming a bishopric seat by the 5th century.
During the Muslim period, a citadel was established on the left bank—the name Alcalá derives from the Arabic word for citadel. After Christian conquest around 1118, the urban nucleus shifted back to the right bank. For much of the late medieval and early modern periods, Alcalá belonged to the archbishops of Toledo.
The town’s transformation came in the 16th century under Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, whose patronage led to the founding of the University of Alcalá. This institutional anchor converted Alcalá into a thriving college town.
