Constructed in the 1st century as a temple of the Imperial cult, the Maison carrée served the religious and civic needs of Roman Nîmes. Its survival through two millennia—unlike thousands of similar temples destroyed across the empire—owes partly to medieval and later adaptive reuses that preserved its structure.
The temple’s influence extended far beyond its walls. Thomas Jefferson, serving as minister to France, commissioned a stucco model of the Maison carrée in 1785, which directly informed his design of the Virginia State Capitol, establishing the building’s role in shaping neoclassical architecture in America.
