History
King Felipe II of Spain, who also reigned as King Filipe I of Portugal and the Algarves, commissioned Fort Jesus to secure the Old Port of Mombasa and consolidate Western control over Indian Ocean trade routes. Built under the direction of master builder Gaspar Rodrigues, this was the final overseas project of architect Cairati, who drew inspiration from the Italian military theorist Pietro Cataneo. The fort endured as Portugal’s sole maintained stronghold on the Swahili coast—a testament to its strategic and symbolic importance.
