History
Goguryeo (37 BCE–668 CE) was a major Korean kingdom controlling the northern and central Korean Peninsula alongside the southern and central Manchuria. The sites reflect the political and cultural development of this expansive realm across multiple centuries.
North Korea first pursued World Heritage designation around 2000, with registration scheduled for 2003. China subsequently applied for recognition of Goguryeo ruins in Jilin Province, leading to a joint designation of both North Korean and Chinese remains in 2004. This simultaneous registration reflects ongoing historical discussions between the two nations regarding Goguryeo’s legacy.

Three fortress-cities form the core of the site: Wunü Mountain City, located in Liaoning; Gungnae and Hwando, situated in Jilin. These cities served as successive capitals and administrative centers. Forty identified royal and noble tombs provide evidence of Goguryeo burial practices and social hierarchy across the kingdom’s lifespan.
