Panjakent

A modern city in western Tajikistan built near the archaeological remains of an ancient Sogdian settlement, situated on the fertile banks of the Zeravshan River.

At a glance

Panjakent straddles past and present. The contemporary city, home to approximately 52,500 residents as of 2020, has grown around the ruins of a significant centre of Sogdiana, the ancient network of oasis cities that flourished along the Silk Road. The old town’s archaeological remains lie on the outskirts of modern Panjakent, offering visitors a tangible link to centuries of trade and cultural exchange.

History

Panjakent was once a prosperous town in Sogdiana, the historic region spanning what is now Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and neighbouring areas. The ancient settlement’s position on the Zeravshan River made it a natural hub for commerce and settlement. Though the original city has long since been abandoned, its ruins remain a valuable archaeological resource for understanding pre-Islamic Central Asia.

What you see

The archaeological remains of the old town occupy the city’s outskirts. Scholars continue to study these ruins to reconstruct the layout, buildings and daily life of this ancient Sogdian centre. The modern city, meanwhile, has developed along the Zeravshan’s banks in this verdant region.

Cultural significance

Panjakent’s ancient ruins illuminate the sophisticated urban cultures that emerged in Central Asia before the Islamic conquest. As a Sogdian settlement, it exemplifies the cosmopolitan character of oasis cities that connected East and West through trade networks. The Sarazm Important Bird Area, located downstream on the river’s tugay-vegetated floodplain, underscores the ecological importance of the Zeravshan valley.
