Giant Wild Goose Pagoda
A monumental brick Buddhist pagoda in southern Xi’an, built in 652 to house sacred texts and sculptures brought from India by the monk-scholar Xuanzang.

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is one of China’s most significant Buddhist monuments. Originally constructed with five stories during the Tang dynasty, it has been altered multiple times over thirteen centuries. Its current exterior brick façade dates to the Ming dynasty, while its interior preserves engraved Buddha statues by the celebrated artist Yan Liben.
History
The pagoda was built around AD 652 in Chang’an (modern Xi’an), then China’s imperial capital. It was constructed to hold Buddhist sutras and figurines of Gautama Buddha brought from India by Xuanzang, a 7th-century monk, scholar, and translator who became central to the transmission of Buddhism to China. In 704, during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian, the pagoda underwent major reconstruction. The Ming dynasty (1368–1644) gave it its present brick exterior, preserving the structure for contemporary visitors.

The pagoda’s current form reflects centuries of renovation and adaptation. Its outer walls are finished in brick characteristic of Ming-era craftsmanship. Inside, the structure houses engraved Buddha statues attributed to Yan Liben, one of the Tang dynasty’s greatest artists. The interior decoration showcases the spiritual purpose the building has maintained since its foundation.
Cultural significance
This pagoda exemplifies the creative interchange between Indian and Chinese Buddhism. As a repository for Xuanzang’s translations and sacred objects, it embodies the profound intellectual and spiritual exchange along the Silk Road. In 2014, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the “Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang’an-Tianshan Corridor” site, recognizing its role in global cultural history.
