Castles of Bellinzona
Three fortified castles and defensive walls encircle Bellinzona, the capital of Swiss Ticino, anchoring a mountain valley at the crossroads of Alpine trade routes.
At a glance
A UNESCO-protected ensemble of three castles—Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro—linked by fortified walls that have guarded Bellinzona for centuries. Together they form one of the most complete medieval defensive systems in the Alps.
History
The three castles developed over centuries to protect the strategic valley town and its control of Alpine passages. Castelgrande, built on a commanding rocky peak, anchors the system with walls extending down to protect the old city and connect to Montebello. Sasso Corbaro, perched on an isolated rocky promontory to the southeast, commands the highest position. The entire fortified complex was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
What you see
Castelgrande dominates the valley from its rocky eminence, with walls that cascade downward to the medieval town below and link architecturally to Montebello. Sasso Corbaro crowns the landscape from its southeastern vantage point. The defensive walls connecting all three castles create a unified system designed to control movement through the Alpine valley.
Cultural significance
The Castles of Bellinzona represent one of Europe’s most sophisticated medieval defensive ensembles. Their preservation demonstrates the historical importance of Ticino as a contested Alpine gateway, and their UNESCO designation reflects their architectural and strategic significance to European heritage.
