Great Living Chola Temples
Three monumental Hindu temples built during the Chola dynasty’s ascendancy, representing the zenith of South Indian temple architecture and stone carving.
At a glance
A UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising three Chola-era temples spanning Tamil Nadu. The Thanjavur temple was inscribed in 1987; the other two followed in 2004. All three showcase the architectural mastery and devotional ambition of the Chola empire at its height.
History
Built between the early 11th and 12th centuries, these temples document successive Chola rulers’ patronage of monumental religious architecture. Rajaraja I commissioned the Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, establishing a template for grandeur that his successor Rajendra Chola I expanded at Gangaikonda Cholapuram. Rajaraja II completed the sequence with the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, cementing the dynasty’s architectural legacy.
What you see
Each temple displays distinctive sculptural programs and structural refinement. The temples feature ornate gopurams (towers), intricate stone carving, and sophisticated spatial planning. All three exemplify the Dravidian architectural style that became the model for Hindu temple construction across South India and Southeast Asia.
Cultural significance
These temples represent the apotheosis of Chola artistic and engineering achievement. They functioned as centers of royal patronage, religious devotion, and administrative authority. Their architectural innovations influenced temple design for centuries across the subcontinent and shaped the aesthetic foundations of South Indian Hindu civilization.
