Đurđevi Stupovi Monastery
A Serbian Orthodox monastery crowned by two soaring bell towers, erected by Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja as an act of devotion to Saint George in the medieval Raška region.
At a glance
Đurđevi Stupovi—”Pillars of St. George”—stands on a wooded prominence near Novi Pazar and the ruins of medieval Stari Ras. The monastery’s defining features are its two tall towers, or pillars, that rise dramatically above the landscape and gave the complex its distinctive name.
History
The monastery was founded around 1170 as an endowment of Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja, the powerful medieval Serbian ruler. According to chronicles preserved by his son Stefan the First-Crowned, Nemanja built the church to honor Saint George, whom he credited with rescuing him from dungeons where his own brothers had imprisoned him. This act of thanksgiving transformed into a site of considerable spiritual and political importance throughout the medieval period.
What you see
The monastery’s architecture is distinguished by its two towering bell structures—the “pillars” (from the Old Slavic word stolp or stub) that dominate the composition. The church itself is dedicated to Saint George. The placement of the complex on a prominent, forested elevation creates a striking visual presence across the landscape.
Cultural significance
Medieval manuscripts and chronicles attest to the monastery’s considerable religious and dynastic importance in Serbian Orthodox tradition. It represents both a personal monument to Nemanja’s piety and a statement of early Serbian power during a formative period of the nation’s cultural development.
