Lokrum
An island retreat in the Adriatic, just 600 metres from Dubrovnik’s Old City, where Habsburg royalty once found refuge among gardens and fortifications.
At a glance
Lokrum is a small Adriatic island notable for its layered history of monastic life, imperial leisure, and military architecture. The island stretches northwest to southeast and maintains regular ferry connections to Dubrovnik, making it easily accessible to visitors.
History
The island’s most famous resident was Archduke Maximilian of Austria, who would later become the short-lived Emperor of Mexico. He established a holiday residence here, leaving behind a monastery and botanical garden that reflect his time on the island. Earlier, during Napoleon’s occupation of Croatia, French forces constructed a defensive fortress on Lokrum’s highest point, which the Austrians subsequently renamed in Maximilian’s honour.
What you see
Fort Royal Castle dominates the island from its highest elevation—96 metres above sea level. This French military structure, originally built as a strategic fortification, was rebranded “Maximilian’s Tower” under Austrian stewardship. Beyond the fortress, visitors encounter a working monastery and botanical gardens, both legacies of the archduke’s tenure.
Cultural significance
Lokrum embodies the crossroads of imperial ambition and regional power struggles in the Mediterranean. Its monuments trace Croatia’s transformation through Napoleonic, Austrian, and modern eras—each layer inscribed in stone and garden design.
