Virunga National Park

A vast protected landscape in the Albertine Rift Valley, Virunga encompasses two active volcanoes, rare mountain gorilla habitat, and over 3,000 species of flora and fauna across 7,800 square kilometers of dramatic terrain.

At a glance

Virunga stretches approximately 300 kilometers from north to south along the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s borders with Uganda and Rwanda. Elevation ranges from 680 meters in the Semliki River valley to 5,109 meters in the Rwenzori Mountains. Two active volcanoes—Mount Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira—dominate the landscape and continuously shape the park’s ecosystems.

History

Established in 1925, Virunga became one of Africa’s oldest protected areas. The park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 in recognition of its exceptional biodiversity and critical role in conserving endangered species. Since 1994, it has been listed as a World Heritage Site in Danger due to regional conflict and human encroachment that have threatened both wildlife and park management.

What you see

The park’s dramatic topography reflects its volcanic origins and geological complexity. The active volcanoes create distinct thermal and mineral-rich environments. Dense montane forests give way to alpine meadows at higher elevations, while lowland wetlands characterize the Semliki valley. These varied habitats create distinct ecological zones within the park’s boundaries.

Cultural significance

Virunga protects one of the world’s last populations of eastern lowland gorillas, found nowhere else. Over 300 species are endemic to the Albertine Rift region, including the golden monkey. The park represents irreplaceable biological wealth and serves as a critical sanctuary for mountain gorillas and other rare primates under severe threat from habitat loss across Central Africa.
