Overview
Mackenzie Castle occupies a prominent position in the Castelletto district on the heights above central Genoa. Its eclectic Gothic Revival design draws on medieval and Renaissance forms, blending towers, decorated facades and richly detailed interiors. The manor is one of the most distinctive private residences built in the city during the period.
History
The castle was created for Evan Mackenzie, a Scottish-Italian insurance magnate, who commissioned an architect to design an elaborate revivalist residence reflecting his taste for medieval and Renaissance art. Built on the Genoese hillside, it served as both a home and a setting for his art collections. In later decades the building passed through different uses and ownership.
What you see
The exterior presents a fortified, castellated silhouette with towers and decorative stonework typical of the Gothic Revival. Inside, the rooms were finished with painted decoration, carved detailing and historicist furnishings evoking earlier centuries. The building’s elevated site gives sweeping views over Genoa and its port.
Cultural significance
Mackenzie Castle is valued as a major example of eclectic Gothic Revival architecture in Liguria and a monument to the cosmopolitan tastes of Genoa’s turn-of-the-century elite. It has become associated with the world of art collecting and auctions in the city.
