Villa Farsetti
A Venetian villa designed by Sienese architect Paolo Posi, built for abbot Filippo Farsetti in the mid-18th century on the site of a much older patrician estate.
At a glance
Villa Farsetti stands in the agricultural landscape of Santa Maria di Sala, near Venice. Commissioned by Filippo Farsetti and designed by Paolo Posi, the villa took three decades to complete. The estate once featured elaborate gardens, labyrinths, cedar woods, greenhouses, groves, and a botanical garden.
History
The site’s history extends far into the medieval period. Before 1200, documents record that the land belonged to the Sala family, a patrician household from Padua. By the mid-1700s, the old structure had fallen into disrepair. Abbot Filippo Farsetti commissioned its demolition and replacement with a new villa, transforming the property into an ambitious horticultural and architectural enterprise that would occupy three decades.
What you see
Paolo Posi, the Sienese architect responsible for the design, created a Venetian villa suited to its rural setting. The villa was accompanied by an extensive landscape program that reflected 18th-century ideals of refinement and botanical knowledge. Gardens, labyrinths, cedar woods, and a dedicated botanical garden composed the grounds—elements suggesting both aesthetic ambition and scientific interest in horticultural cultivation.
Cultural significance
Villa Farsetti represents the continued vitality of villa culture in the Veneto during the 18th century, when the region’s patrician families invested in grand country estates. The site documents the transformation of medieval aristocratic holdings into modern properties shaped by Enlightenment values. Its botanical gardens and landscape features reflect contemporary European interest in natural sciences and garden design.
