At a glance
Telč is a small Moravian town famous for one of the most harmonious historic squares in Europe. After a fire in the 14th century, and especially under a 16th-century lord enamoured of the Italian Renaissance, the town was rebuilt in stone: a long triangular square lined on both sides with arcaded houses, each with a different gabled or pedimented front, yet all in unison. Ringed by ponds and anchored by a Renaissance chateau, the historic centre was inscribed by UNESCO in 1992.

History
Telč grew at a crossing of trade routes, its early wooden town protected by water. After fires, the lord Zachariáš of Hradec, who had travelled in Italy, rebuilt the place in the mid-16th century in the Renaissance manner, transforming the modest castle into an elegant chateau and encouraging the townsfolk to rebuild their houses around the square in stone.
The arcaded houses, with their varied gables, were raised over the following decades, and later given Baroque touches, but the Renaissance harmony survived. Because the town never industrialised heavily, the square has come down to us almost unchanged.
What you see
The square itself is the masterpiece: a long, gently tapering space framed by continuous arcades, above which rise gabled and pedimented house-fronts painted in soft colours, with a plague column and fountains at the centre. At one end stands the chateau, its halls rich in Renaissance and later decoration, opening onto a garden.
Beyond the houses the ponds mirror the town, and a tower offers a view over the red roofs.
