Villa Widmann Rezzonico Foscari
An eighteenth-century Venetian villa on the Riviera del Brenta that hosted celebrated artists, composers, and writers drawn by its rococo interiors and sculptured gardens.
At a glance
Villa Widmann stands as a testament to Venetian aristocratic taste, its rooms adorned with rococo frescoes and its grounds populated with classical statuary. Known by several names across centuries—Sceriman, Foscari, Costanzo—the villa attracted literary and musical figures throughout the eighteenth and twentieth centuries.
History
Built in the eighteenth century, Villa Widmann became a salon for Venetian cultural life. Count Ludovico Widmann, originally from Carinthia and a passionate theater enthusiast, welcomed the great playwright Carlo Goldoni, who became a dear friend of the family. Later, Cardinal Giuseppe Sarto, Patriarch of Venice, was among its distinguished guests. The villa changed hands over time, notably passing to Count Pietro Foscari, whose circle included the writer Gabriele D’Annunzio. Russian composer Igor Stravinsky also found pleasure in the villa’s grounds during visits to the Brenta.
What you see
The interior features elaborate rococo ornamentation, particularly evident in the ballroom where frescoes by Giuseppe Angeli showcase the style’s characteristic scrollwork and decorative abundance. The gardens present an open-air sculpture gallery: classical statuary depicting gods, heroes, nymphs, seasons, and hours scattered across the grounds in soft stone, weathered by time into varied hues of white, gray, yellow with lichen, green with moss, and spotted patina.
Cultural significance
Villa Widmann embodies the refined aesthetic world of Venetian nobility and their connections to the broader European cultural sphere. Its appeal to artists and intellectuals—from playwrights to composers to writers—demonstrates the villa’s role as a meeting place for creative minds during a transformative period in European art and music.
