Luciana Matalon Foundation
A 700-square-meter space dedicated to contemporary art, housing exhibitions, conferences and the documented archive of Luciana Matalon’s four decades of artistic practice across painting, sculpture and jewelry.
At a glance
The Luciana Matalon Foundation operates as a dual-purpose institution: a public venue for contemporary artistic research and a personal museum archive. The foundation promotes both emerging and established artists through exhibitions and cultural programming while preserving the multifaceted practice of its namesake artist.
History
Founded in 2000, the Luciana Matalon Foundation emerged from a deliberate mission to create a dedicated space for the study and advancement of contemporary art. The institution documents over forty years of Matalon’s creative output across America, Europe and Japan.
What you see
The 700-square-meter space divides into functional zones. The entrance, front rooms and mezzanine serve as exhibition and event areas for the foundation’s programming. The rear section houses the museum proper, where Matalon’s works in painting, sculpture and jewelry are displayed with rotating installations.
The museum itself constitutes an artwork. Conceived entirely by Matalon, its pavement features a pictorial intervention employing resins and optical fibers, creating an “astral city” populated by stellar forms and cosmic voids. The flooring incorporates reflections and notes by Matalon alongside texts by travel companions including Roberto Sanesi, Miklos Varga, Armando Ginesi and Arturo Schwarz.
Cultural significance
The foundation represents a distinctive model of artist-led institutional practice, merging exhibition space with personal archive. By rotating installations of Matalon’s varied body of work, the foundation demonstrates the evolution and interconnection of different artistic mediums within a single practice.
