History
According to tradition, in 1526 a cardinal’s servant accidentally dropped an image of the Madonna into a well attached to the cardinal’s palace stable. The well reportedly overflowed, flooding the stable with water. When servants rushed to save the animals, they discovered a stone floating on the water—the miraculous image itself. During recovery attempts, the image slipped from their hands, but the cardinal’s prayer caused the waters to retreat spontaneously.
When the cardinal reported the event to the Pope, Church authorities recognized it as supernatural. A decision was made to build a church around the miraculous well to venerate the recovered image in perpetuity.
