Church of the Holy Crucifix
A baroque church in Castelbuono’s oldest quarter, built around a predecessor dedicated to St. Peter and later repurposed as a community and cultural space.

Erected at the end of the 16th century adjacent to an earlier Church of St. Peter, it bears the architectural hallmark of its era—a splendid bell tower that dominates the streetscape and remains clearly visible today.
History
The site had long held sacred significance. The original Church of St. Peter stood in roughly the same location and continued to be officiated as late as 1750, when it was gradually absorbed by the newly erected Church of the Most Holy Crucifix. The reformed church received ecclesiastical blessing from the Court of Messina in 1739, marking formal recognition after a decade of construction work.
The church served as the seat of a women’s devotional congregation composed largely of local nobility. Lenten observances, particularly the Friday of Lent, formed the most important ritual in the church’s liturgical calendar. Following restoration during the 1990s, the Diocese entrusted the property to Castelbuono’s municipality in 2013 for ten years, converting the space into a youth and cultural workshop.

The bell tower remains the structure’s most distinctive feature—a testament to baroque ecclesiastical design of the period. The church’s high altar held a niche designed to display the image of the Holy Crucifix, the object of devotion that gave the building its name and liturgical purpose.

The church embodies the religious and social stratification of early modern Sicily. Its role as a meeting place for noble women reveals how churches functioned as centers of lay piety and social identity, extending beyond purely spiritual functions to include congregational solidarity and civic presence.
