History
In 1539, Emperor Charles V of the House of Habsburg issued the order to demolish Lecce’s medieval fortress and construct a new defensive structure using advanced military engineering techniques. Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya, general engineer of the Kingdom of Naples, received the commission to design and oversee construction. The outermost fortifications were completed between 1539 and 1549. In 1872, significant alterations removed the surrounding ditch and two access bridges—the Porta Reale and the Gate Fake (or Rescue Gate)—though the Porta Reale remains the sole functioning entrance today.

The rear façade, facing the Adriatic, exhibits the most substantial development and fortification in response to historical threats from sea-based attacks.
