Royal Liver Building
Two clock towers, two mythical birds: the building that watches over the Mersey and the city it named.
At a glance
The Royal Liver Building stands at the Pier Head, the tallest of Liverpool’s three waterfront giants. Walter Aubrey Thomas designed it for the Royal Liver Assurance friendly society, and it was built between 1908 and 1911 using a reinforced-concrete frame, one of the earliest in the world at this scale. On its twin towers perch the Liver Birds, the mythical creatures that are the city’s emblem.
Key facts

- Built: 1908–1911
- Structure: early reinforced concrete
- Famous for: the Liver Birds on its clock towers
History
The Royal Liver Assurance grew from a Victorian burial society into one of the country’s largest insurers, and wanted headquarters to match. Thomas answered with a tall, twin-towered block on the riverfront, built fast in the new reinforced concrete.
Finished in 1911, it joined the Cunard and Port of Liverpool buildings to form the Three Graces, the row that defined the city from the water. The Liver Birds, set on the towers, became the symbol of Liverpool itself.
What you see
The building rises in grey granite to two clock towers, each topped by a copper Liver Bird, wings spread, one looking to the sea and one to the city. The clocks, set going at the moment of the coronation in 1911, are among the largest in Britain. From the river, the silhouette is pure Liverpool.
