Grand Hotel Regina

Giuseppe Boni’s 1911 hotel carries Liberty ironwork designed by Alessandro Mazzucotelli — the Milanese master who taught Italian Art Nouveau how to bend metal.

At a glance

The Grand Hotel Regina belongs to the wave of hotels that rose in Salsomaggiore as the spa reached its peak before the First World War. Built from 1911 to a design by Giuseppe Boni and opened in 1913, then enlarged in the 1920s, it is best known for its wrought-iron detailing designed by Alessandro Mazzucotelli, the leading metalworker of Italian Liberty.

Key facts

  • Built: from 1911, opened 1913 (as the Hôtel Regina and Simplon); enlarged in the 1920s
  • Architect: Giuseppe Boni
  • Ironwork: designed by Alessandro Mazzucotelli, executed by Antonio Veronesi’s workshop
  • Style: Liberty (Italian Art Nouveau)
  • Location: Largo Roma, Salsomaggiore Terme

History

By 1911 Salsomaggiore was at its fashionable height, and new hotels were going up to house the winter cure-takers. Giuseppe Boni, who worked repeatedly in the town, designed the Regina, built from 1911 and opened in 1913 as the Hôtel Regina and Simplon. It was enlarged in the 1920s as demand kept climbing.

For its ironwork Boni turned to designs by Alessandro Mazzucotelli, executed in Antonio Veronesi’s workshop. Mazzucotelli’s forged grilles and canopies appear across the great Liberty buildings of northern Italy, and the same artist later worked on the Casino at San Pellegrino Terme. His metalwork gives the Regina its sharpest Art Nouveau accent.

What you see

The façade is a symmetrical Liberty front, its balconies and openings tied together by ironwork to Mazzucotelli’s designs — tendrils, whiplash curves and floral knots forged in iron. The decoration concentrates where the eye lingers: the entrance, the balcony rails, the crowning cornice.

The building still functions as a hotel, so the exterior is the part most readily seen.
