Kingdom of Heaven — Film Location
Ridley Scott filmed much of Kingdom of Heaven (2005), his Crusades epic, on the Atlantic ramparts of Essaouira and across the Moroccan interior, its sea walls standing in for the Mediterranean port from which the hero sails for the Holy Land (the great Jerusalem set itself was built inland at Ouarzazate). Essaouira’s eighteenth-century sea bastions, laid out by a European engineer for a Moroccan sultan, gave the film its battered, salt-washed fortifications.
