The Sassi of Matera open No Time to Die (2021), Daniel Craig’s last outing as James Bond, with a breathless Aston Martin chase through the cave-city’s stepped lanes. Matera’s rock-cut dwellings — among the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world — had already drawn Pasolini and Mel Gibson, but the Bond sequence gave the UNESCO-listed town its largest global audience.
