Overview
Kuldiga keeps the Duchy of Courland’s townscape whole – log houses with tile roofs, the 17th-century town hall square, and lanes where the duchy that colonized Tobago and Gambia (Europe’s smallest colonial power) did its accounts. Before it the Venta river drops over Ventas Rumba, Europe’s widest waterfall at 249 metres, where vimba fish famously leap upstream – flying fish caught in baskets in ducal days. UNESCO listed the ensemble in 2023.
History
Duke Jakob’s 17th-century fleet sailed from Courland’s ports to Caribbean and African ventures; Kuldiga, an early capital, prospered then slept through empires – preservation by quiet. The 1874 brick bridge across the falls ranks among Europe’s longest of its kind; herring-age warehouses and the synagogue (now library) layer the town’s commerce and communities.
Architecture and Design
Log-built burgher houses – some 17th-century – line Liepajas street’s curve; courtyard galleries and the Aleksupite millstream’s channel thread gardens. The ensemble’s integrity, UNESCO noted, preserves a Hanseatic-fringe town’s full grain.
Cultural significance
Kuldiga holds the Baltic’s wooden-town heritage at its most complete and the Courland duchy’s improbable Atlantic story; the fish-leaping falls give Latvia its signature natural-cultural image.
Visiting today
The falls’ spring fish-runs and summer swimming, the old town’s cafes, and the brick bridge’s span fill a slow day; Riga lies 2.5 hours by road.
Getting there
Buses from Riga serve Kuldiga several times daily; the old town walks end to end in twenty minutes.
