Overview

Since we can’t export the scenery, said CPR’s Van Horne, we’ll import the tourists – and built the Banff Springs above the Bow valley’s falls in 1888, rebuilding it through 1928 in Rundle-stone baronial towers that seem grown from the mountainside. The castle’s 750 rooms anchor Banff National Park, Canada’s first and the Rockies’ UNESCO heart.

History

The hot springs’ discovery sparked park and hotel together – conservation and tourism’s Canadian compact; royalty, Monroe filming River of No Return, and ghost lore (the bride of the staircase, Sam the bellman) layered the legend. Winter operation from 1969 added ski-castle to the summer pilgrimage.

Architecture and Design

W. S. Painter’s and J. W. Orrock’s rebuilds stacked baronial turrets and stepped gables in local stone; Mount Stephen Hall’s Gothic windows and the springs’ terraces frame the valley. The silhouette against Sulphur Mountain is the Rockies’ postcard.

Cultural significance

The hotel wrote the model – grand lodge inside protected wilderness – copied across the world’s parks, and remains Canadian tourism’s founding monument, National Historic Site since 1988.

Visiting today

Public spaces, terraces, and the bowling-alley-era basement museum corner welcome non-guests; the falls walk and gondola pair naturally. Book far ahead in season.

Getting there

Banff is 90 minutes from Calgary; Roam buses link town and hotel below Sulphur Mountain.
