Overview
The Liberty opened in March 1949, christened for the freedom won eighteen months before – the last great Deco cinema of Bombay and the best preserved. Its ivory tower-fin rises over Marine Lines like a ship’s funnel; within, etched mirrors, Burma teak, and a ceiling of plaster waves carry the streamline dream intact to the present seat-springs.
History
Built by exhibitor Habib Hoosein as Hindi cinema’s flagship – no Hollywood here, a nationalist statement – the Liberty premiered Mughal-e-Azam in 1960, the era’s defining epic, its poster nights legendary. The single screen survived the multiplex extinction through the family’s devotion, hosting festivals, concerts, and shoots that treat the auditorium itself as the star.
Architecture and Design
Abbott’s facade composes flagpole fin, porthole windows, and the canopy’s sweep; the foyer’s double stair coils beneath a sunburst, and the hall’s 1,200 seats face a proscenium framed in light coves. Original carpets, uniforms, and the crying-room for infants preserve 1949’s complete experience.
Cultural significance
The Liberty is the sentimental flagship of Art Deco Mumbai’s UNESCO ensemble and of single-screen India – the house where the republic’s cinema came of age, maintained as a living archive of moviegoing’s rites.
Visiting today
Screenings and events are intermittent – check listings; the facade and foyer can be glimpsed daily. Marine Drive’s Deco mile begins two blocks west.

Marine Lines station adjoins; the cinema stands opposite the gymkhana maidans on Vithaldas Thackersey Marg.
