The St. Alexander’s Fair began in the 10th century, held annually from August 22—the feast day of Bergamo’s patron saint—until September 8. Merchants and patrons traveled considerable distances to participate in this major trading event, held on meadowland in the lower city.
Outside fair season, the site served as pasture for livestock. By the mid-19th century, the fair’s importance had sharply declined. A modern incarnation emerged in 2003, focusing on agricultural heritage with livestock exhibits, farming machinery, food and wine products, and agricultural innovation.
