Mandralisca Museum
A personal collection of art, archaeology, and natural history housed in the former home of a 19th-century Sicilian collector—Cefalù’s only museum.
At a glance
The Mandralisca Museum preserves an interdisciplinary collection assembled by Baron Enrico Pirajno di Mandralisca across his lifetime. Archaeological pieces, paintings, shell specimens, coins, and furnishings fill the rooms where the collection was originally arranged. The museum welcomes approximately twenty thousand visitors annually.
History
Baron Enrico Pirajno di Mandralisca (1809–1864) devoted his brief life to acquiring art and objects of scholarly interest. He displayed his assembled pieces within his own residence, establishing an institution that would outlast him. The museum archives and foundation records, preserved on the premises, document the history of both collector and collection in detail.
What you see
The museum occupies the baron’s former home, where original furnishings and architectural arrangements remain. Display areas span multiple rooms, each organised by category: galleries for paintings, cases for archaeological finds and numismatic items, and dedicated spaces for the malacological collection—a significant holding of shells and related specimens.
Cultural significance
As Cefalù’s sole museum, the Mandralisca serves as the city’s principal repository of cultural heritage. The collection reflects 19th-century collecting practices and tastes, while the preserved archives offer insight into the institution’s development and the life of its founder.
