Ancient Village of Monterano

Within a nature reserve of springs and waterfalls, the ruined settlement of Monterano emerges from dense woodland—a town reclaimed by nature after its inhabitants fled, offering a haunting glimpse into Renaissance village life.

At a glance

The ancient village of Monterano sits on a tuffaceous hill deep within the Monterano Nature Reserve. Though reduced to ruins, its domestic structures, towers, churches and baronial palace retain enough detail to evoke the rhythms of daily life centuries past. The site’s gradual recolonization by nature—among sulphurous springs, wild pastures and waterfalls—creates a landscape both melancholic and arresting.

History

Monterano was abandoned after its inhabitants fled, and the passage of time allowed the surrounding landscape to gradually reclaim the settlement. The village’s layout and architectural remains preserve evidence of sustained occupation before this departure.

What you see

Visitors walk among house foundations, defensive towers, and ecclesiastical structures. The Church of San Bonaventura dominates the site—described as cathedral-like on its plateau, enclosed by dense woodland. The renowned architect Bernini probably designed this church and other features of the village, as evidenced in surviving architectural details and interior spaces visible among the ruins.

Cultural significance

Monterano represents a rare opportunity to read the material culture of Renaissance settlement life directly from ruins. The interplay between human construction and natural reclamation creates a space for contemplating abandonment, resilience and the cycles that shape inhabited places.
