SIENA, TUSCANY · MEDIEVAL

Siena

A medieval brick city famed for its fan-shaped central square, UNESCO-listed historic centre, and the legendary Palio horse race that defines civic identity.

At a glance

Siena stands as one of Tuscany’s most distinctive cities, celebrated for its architectural unity and medieval character. The historic centre earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1995, recognizing its outstanding universal value. The city’s seventeen historic districts radiate from Piazza del Campo, the iconic heart of civic life.

History

Medieval Siena developed as a powerful republic, its visual identity shaped by centuries of brick construction and careful urban planning. The city remains home to the Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, founded in 1472 and the world’s oldest continuously operating bank. This institutional longevity mirrors Siena’s own enduring character.

What you see

Piazza del Campo dominates the city with its distinctive fan shape and surrounding palaces. The Palazzo Pubblico, executed in Gothic style, anchors the square alongside the Torre del Mangia, a slender 14th-century tower whose white battlements offer panoramic views across the city and surrounding landscape.

Beyond the square, medieval street furniture—doorways, windows, shutters—maintains stylistic consistency throughout the centre. Churches including San Domenico and Santa Maria dei Servi punctuate narrow streets lined with artisan shops selling local handicrafts and regional products like cantucci and Vin Santo.

Cultural significance

The Palio transcends sporting spectacle—it represents civic identity inseparable from Siena’s daily life and memory. Ten of the city’s seventeen districts compete annually in this bareback horse race, which circles Piazza del Campo three times. The event, held on 2 July and 16 August, is preceded by a historic procession featuring over 600 costumed participants.

For Sienese residents, the Palio’s importance resists easy explanation to outsiders. It binds community, tradition, and territory into something profoundly integral to what the city means to those who inhabit it.
