Tonnara of Marzamemi

One of Sicily’s most significant tuna fisheries, the Tonnara of Marzamemi combines medieval Arab origins with later Sicilian noble patronage to form a rare working monument to Mediterranean maritime tradition.

At a glance

The Tonnara of Marzamemi is a historic tuna fishery located in the Syracuse province of southeastern Sicily. It stands as one of the island’s most important examples of this specialized maritime industry, merging centuries of operational tradition with architectural heritage.

History

The tonnara’s origins trace to the era of Arab domination in Sicily, making it a tangible link to the island’s medieval past. In 1630, the facility passed into the ownership of the Prince of Villadorata, marking a turning point in its development. The Villadorata family invested substantially in the structure, importing skilled carpenters from nearby Avola and Syracuse to strengthen and expand the buildings. Many of these craftsmen settled permanently in Marzamemi, establishing a community centered around the fishery’s operations.

What you see

The tonnara comprises functional buildings designed for the specialized work of tuna fishing and processing. The structures reflect both Arab-period construction techniques and 17th-century Sicilian reinforcement, creating a layered architectural palimpsest that speaks to different periods of enhancement and adaptation.

Cultural significance

Tonnare were vital to Sicily’s economy and identity for centuries, representing the intersection of fishing expertise, maritime trade, and noble patronage. Marzamemi’s tonnara exemplifies how such facilities functioned not merely as industrial sites but as generators of settlement, community, and cultural exchange across the Mediterranean.
