The Monumental Tombs and the Madonna del Parto Church
A layered sanctuary carved into tuff stone, where a medieval church stands atop a Roman mithraeum, which itself was built over an Etruscan burial chamber.
At a glance
Located within the regional park Antichissima Città di Sutri, this site preserves multiple religious strata spanning nearly two millennia. The rock-cut tombs and church occupy a landscape rich with medieval pilgrimage history, where the Via Francigena once guided travelers toward Rome.
History
The site’s archaeological layers reveal successive religious uses. An Etruscan tomb formed the foundation; above it stood a 3rd-century Roman mithraeum, an underground sanctuary devoted to Mithraism—an ancient Hellenistic religion centered on the god Mithras. In 380 AD, the mithraeum was transformed into a Christian church. A 13th-century renovation added an entrance and an apse, marking the final major modification to the structure.
Sutri itself held strategic importance during the medieval period as a station for pilgrims traveling the Via Francigena to Rome.
What you see
The small rock church retains distinctive features from its Mithraic past, including the characteristically dim interior lighting of ancient mystery cult spaces. The tombs cut into the tuff display mixed-rite burials—combining both cineraries in small niches and spaces for intact inhumations. A 13th-century fresco depicting the Nativity adorns the apse, a Christian addition to the sacred space.
Cultural significance
The site embodies the religious and cultural continuity of the Mediterranean world. It traces the transition from pre-Christian mystery cults through early Christianity to medieval devotion, all preserved within a single carved sanctuary. The presence of mixed burial rites and multiple architectural layers documents shifting funeral practices and faith traditions across centuries.
