Barri Gòtic — The Gothic Quarter
Two thousand years of city compressed into a maze of stone alleys and hidden squares.
At a glance
The Barri Gòtic is the oldest part of Barcelona, built on the Roman town of Barcino and layered with medieval streets, palaces and churches. It is best explored without a map: narrow lanes open suddenly onto quiet squares, Roman walls surface between buildings, and the famous neo-Gothic bridge arches over Carrer del Bisbe. At its centre sit the seats of city and regional power on Plaça Sant Jaume.
Key facts
- Origins: Roman Barcino, then medieval Barcelona
- Heart: Plaça Sant Jaume (City Hall + Generalitat)
- Icon: the Carrer del Bisbe bridge (1928, Joan Rubió)
- Also: Plaça del Rei, the cathedral, Roman wall remains
History
Roman colonists founded Barcino around 10 BC; stretches of their wall still stand. Over the Middle Ages the quarter filled with the cathedral, royal palace and guild streets. Much of its “medieval” picturesqueness was actually sharpened in the early twentieth century, when restorers — including the architect of the Bisbe bridge — gave the area the storybook Gothic look tourists love.
What you see
Plaça Sant Jaume faces off the Ajuntament (City Hall) and the Palau de la Generalitat, Catalonia’s government. Plaça del Rei is a near-perfect medieval square ringed by the royal palace. Between them, Carrer del Bisbe runs under its carved bridge, and Roman columns and walls appear where you least expect them.
