History
Founded in the 11th century, Zemen gained prominence when Serbian despot Dejan donated funds in 1334 to redecorate the church. The monastery endured centuries of decline, falling into ruin until major restoration work began in the mid-19th century. Following the Ottoman Empire’s collapse in 1878, a bell tower was added to the complex. Monks’ quarters were constructed during the 19th-century restoration campaign.
What you see
The church features a cruciform plan with three apses and a dome rebuilt in the 19th century during restoration. Within its walls lie frescoes spanning the 12th to 14th centuries. The 12th-century layer includes The Refusal of Offerings Made by Joachim and Anna and a figure identifiable as either an Old Testament king (David or Solomon) or Saints Constantine and Elena. The 14th-century portraits depict the church’s founders, despot Dejan and his wife Teodora-Evdokija. All frescoes have undergone professional conservation.
