Zalău County Museum

A museum of regional history and art housing archaeological finds from the surrounding Salaj region, including Roman-era discoveries from the nearby Roman fort of Porolissum.

At a glance

The Zalău County Museum preserves the material heritage of north-central Transylvania. Its collections span local history and art, anchored by archaeological material recovered from systematic excavations in the region. The museum’s work extends to active fieldwork at significant Roman sites.

History

Established in 1951, the museum has grown into a research institution conducting archaeological investigations across Salaj County. In 2015, during restoration work at the sacred area of Porolissum—the site of a Roman auxiliary fort—museum archaeologists uncovered a stone sarcophagus in an unexpected location outside the known cemetery. The limestone vessel contained skeletal remains of a young individual, with carved decoration typical of Roman craftsmanship. Evidence of ancient grave robbing appeared in a hole through the lid, suggesting the burial was disturbed antiquity itself.

What you see

The museum’s permanent displays draw on regional finds spanning multiple periods. Notable artifacts include the Roman sarcophagus discovered at Porolissum, which exemplifies the carved limestone funerary practices of the Roman military presence in Dacia.

Cultural significance

The museum serves as a regional center for understanding the Roman occupation of Transylvania and the subsequent history of the Salaj area. Discoveries like the Porolissum sarcophagus illuminate burial customs and settlement patterns during antiquity. Active archaeological fieldwork continues to refine knowledge of the region’s past.
