Yoido Full Gospel Church
One of the world’s largest Pentecostal congregations, this Seoul church has shaped modern Korean Christianity through decades of rapid institutional growth.
At a glance
Yoido Full Gospel Church stands on Yeouido, an island in central Seoul, as a monument to Korean Pentecostalism’s explosive expansion. With approximately 870,000 members, it ranks among the globe’s largest single-congregation churches and commands immense influence in South Korean religious life.
History
David Yonggi Cho and Choi Ja-shil founded the church in 1958, during South Korea’s post-war reconstruction. The congregation expanded dramatically through the following decades. In 1973, the church relocated to its current Yeouido site, and the building was constructed by Sampoong Construction Industries—the same firm responsible for the Sampoong Department Store. Young Hoon Lee presently leads the institution and its satellite locations across Seoul.
What you see
The current sanctuary, built in 1973, reflects the scale of the congregation’s ambitions. Designed to accommodate its massive weekly attendance, the structure exemplifies mid-twentieth-century ecclesiastical architecture adapted for mass gatherings.
Cultural significance
Yoido Full Gospel Church represents a pivotal force in Korean religious history. As an Assemblies of God-affiliated congregation, it demonstrates the deep roots of Pentecostalism in South Korea and the church’s role in shaping post-colonial Korean society through spiritual leadership, charitable networks, and social engagement.
