History
The station opened on 21 May 1855 when the Utrecht–Rotterdam railway line was completed. A new Jugendstil building replaced the original structure in 1911, reflecting the architectural fashion of early 20th-century Europe. Between 1993 and 1996, modernization work updated the interior infrastructure—new roof and stairways—while respecting the period building’s character.
A major 21st-century intervention addressed congestion: rising train frequency and motor traffic created bottlenecks at a level crossing on the station’s western side. A short road tunnel, constructed in the early 2000s, eliminated the crossing and separated vehicular and rail traffic.
