Located in the Lavant Valley near Chichester, West Dean House forms the centerpiece of a 6,350-acre historic estate in West Sussex. Renowned for its distinctive knapped flint elevations and crenellated parapets, the manor was established as an international educational trust in 1964 by surrealist patron Edward James. Today, the estate fosters traditional craftsmanship, conservation of historic artifacts, and public horticultural visits across its heritage gardens.

Key facts

History

The estate was purchased in 1738 by Sir John Peachey and extensively rebuilt in 1804 by James Wyatt for the first Lord Selsey. In 1891, the estate was acquired by merchant prince William Dodge James, who modernized the interiors with architect George & Peto. His son, Edward James, a passionate collector of Surrealist art and friend of Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, inherited the house in 1912. Dedicated to preserving endangered traditional decorative crafts and fine arts, James deeded the entire estate to an educational foundation in 1964, opening West Dean College in 1971.

What you see

Visitors approaching along the drive observe Wyatt’s striking Gothic facade facing South Downs parkland, faced in locally sourced black knapped flint with stone dressings and battlemented towers. The interior preserves historic oak stairways, state reception halls, historic tapestries, and specialized modern conservation studios devoted to historic horology, furniture, ceramics, and bookbinding.
