Washington Hall

A historic community center born from Seattle’s immigrant heritage, now a vibrant venue for arts and gatherings.

At a glance

Washington Hall stands as a testament to Seattle’s multicultural past. Originally built to serve new arrivals, the building has evolved through successive waves of community stewardship—from Danish fraternal society to African-American Masonic lodge to contemporary cultural institution.

History

The Danish Brotherhood in America, a fraternal organization, erected Washington Hall as a community center with meeting halls and one-room apartments designed for newly arrived immigrants. In 1973, the organization sold the building to the Sons of Haiti, an African-American Masonic group, who leased the space to various tenants over the following decades. Historic Seattle acquired the property in 2009 and undertook a comprehensive renovation, reopening it in 2010 as an events and performance space.

What you see

The building retains its original character as a mixed-use structure. Meeting halls and residential quarters reflect its origins as immigrant housing, while contemporary renovations have preserved historic elements while adapting the space for modern performance and assembly.

Cultural significance

Washington Hall embodies Seattle’s evolving cultural identity. It represents the city’s Danish immigrant community of the early twentieth century and later served as a gathering place for African-American civic life. Today, as a registered city landmark and National Register property, it continues its role as a cultural anchor—now hosting performances, exhibitions, and community events.
