History
The church was consecrated in 1855 under the original name Aker Church, though it was renamed Vestre Aker Church six years later in 1861. The adjacent Vestre Aker Cemetery was inaugurated simultaneously with the church. A comprehensive restoration undertaken in 1969 brought the structure into its current condition.

The church exemplifies Neo-Gothic design, conceived by architect Heinrich Ernst Schirmer. Its most significant interior element is the pulpit, drawn by Alexis de Chateauneuf around 1850, which originally graced Oslo Cathedral before finding its place here.
Stained glass windows by Bernhard Greve punctuate the interior—the central window dates to 1939, while the side windows were installed in 1955. A church organ with 27 voices provides musical accompaniment, while two church bells occupy the bell tower.

Vestre Aker Church represents nineteenth-century Norwegian ecclesiastical architecture and craftsmanship. The repurposing of the Chateauneuf pulpit demonstrates the interconnected heritage of Oslo’s religious institutions. The Greve windows reflect mid-twentieth-century stained glass practice in Norway.
