History
Completed in 1839, the chapel opened as a place of worship at the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign. Over its first century and a half, it welcomed Unitarians, Welsh Baptists, and Jehovah’s Witnesses. It later functioned as an Islamic mosque, reflecting Manchester’s changing religious demographics.
By the late 20th century, the building fell into severe disrepair. Listed as Grade II* in 1974 and rated “very bad” on the Buildings at Risk Register, it became one of the Victorian Society’s ten most threatened buildings in England and Wales. Partial demolition occurred in 2006.
Manchester City Council commissioned its restoration and conversion to student accommodation, completed in 2017 by Buttress Architects.
