Università Ca’ Foscari

Italy’s oldest business school, founded in 1868, occupies the Gothic palazzo Ca’ Foscari on the Grand Canal. A pioneering institution in commercial and economic education, it shaped higher learning across the Italian peninsula.

At a glance

Università Ca’ Foscari is a state university established as the “Scuola Superiore di Commercio” (School of Higher Commerce). It remains the oldest business school in Italy and among the world’s earliest institutions dedicated to commercial and economic education. The university is housed in Ca’ Foscari, a Gothic palazzo overlooking the Grand Canal.

History

The university was founded in 1868 by Luigi Luzzatti, a renowned economist; Edoardo Deodati, vice-president of the Province of Venice; and Francesco Ferrara, a senator of the Kingdom of Italy and the school’s first director. Ferrara, an economist of liberal orientation, shaped the institution’s early vision.

From its inception, Ca’ Foscari was Italy’s first institution to offer superior instruction in commercial, economic, and linguistic studies. It drew inspiration from the business academy in Antwerp, which since 1853 had combined theoretical teaching with practical training. The school’s founders envisioned it as a place to prepare merchants with rigorous theory and to train future professors of economic subjects for secondary schools.

What you see

Ca’ Foscari, the palazzo housing the university, is a Gothic structure fronting the Grand Canal. The building embodies Venetian architectural tradition while serving as a centre of intellectual life.

Cultural significance

The university pioneered Italian higher education in commerce and economics at a moment when such training was rare. Its curriculum incorporated foreign languages—both Western and Oriental—as essential complements to economic study, a progressive approach for the period. Ca’ Foscari established a model for business education that influenced institutions across Italy.
