The Technical Faculty building in Zagreb — one architect’s best work, finished as the war began

Milovan Kovačević had a short career. The building he is remembered for opened in 1940, and the architects of Croatia have been taught in it ever since.

At a glance

The building at Kačićeva 26 in Zagreb — formally Fra Andrije Kačića Miošića 26 — was built between 1937 and 1940 for the Technical Faculty of the University of Zagreb, to designs by Milovan Kovačević. It is described as the most significant work of an architect whose career was short. The faculty moved in in 1940. Civil engineering is still taught there, and the Faculty of Architecture, established in 1962, has the same address.

History

Technical teaching in Zagreb begins in 1919, when the Technical Higher School took its first students. Its building department worked on the first floor of a converted school on Rooseveltov trg — the usual beginning, in somebody else’s rooms.

A building of its own was designed by Milovan Kovačević and raised between 1937 and 1940. The timing is the hard fact of this building: it was finished in the year Yugoslavia had left before the invasion, by an architect whose working life was short. The Croatian Academy, which has exhibited his work, calls it his most significant realisation.

The institutions inside it then divided, as technical faculties everywhere did when their subjects grew too large for one roof. The Technical Faculty was split in 1956, and split again in 1962: on 26 September of that year the Faculty of Architecture was established in its own right, with roots going back to the Royal Technical College of 1919. Civil engineering stayed in the building too, and both are there now.

What we could not find

The sources we checked document the architect, the dates and the institutions, but not the building’s architectural character or its heritage status. We have not described what the building looks like, because we have not found a source we can stand behind for it. If you can point us to one, we will add the description and say where it came from.

Where it stands

Kačićeva runs west of the centre, in the part of Zagreb laid out as the city expanded in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A technical faculty built at the end of the 1930s belongs to the last phase of that expansion, before the war stopped it.
