The establishment of the Diocese of Szombathely in 1777 made a cathedral essential. The exterior was completed in 1797, though interior finishing work extended to 1814. World War II bombing destroyed the ceiling frescoes attributed to Franz Anton Maulbertsch and his school, a significant loss to the cathedral’s artistic patrimony.
