Overview
Bova Marina lies on the southern tip of the Italian peninsula, in an area that formed part of the ancient cultural corridor linking Greece, Sicily, and the Italian mainland. The discovery of a late antique synagogue here confirmed that Jewish communities were established along the Calabrian coast by at least the 4th century AD, participating in the vibrant multicultural world of late imperial Rome. The site is now protected as an archaeological park and houses an interpretive museum explaining the finds in their broader historical context.
History
Excavations in the 1980s revealed a rectangular building whose polychrome mosaic floor bore Jewish symbols including a menorah, a lulav, an etrog, and Greek inscriptions — clear markers of its synagogue function. The building is dated on stylistic and stratigraphic grounds to the 4th–6th centuries AD, a period when Jewish communities were present across southern Italy, often as merchants and craftspeople integrated into local urban economies. The site takes the name Archeoderi from the locality, and the museum was subsequently established to house and explain the finds.
What you see
The heart of the site is the in situ mosaic floor of the ancient synagogue, partially preserved and protected under cover. The geometric and figured mosaic panels display the characteristic iconographic vocabulary of late antique Jewish art, combining Hellenistic decorative conventions with specifically Jewish symbolic imagery. The museum displays smaller finds from the excavation including ceramic vessels, lamps, glass, and metal objects, along with panels explaining the history of Jewish communities in Calabria and Magna Graecia.
Cultural significance
The Bova Marina synagogue is one of the few late antique Jewish buildings surviving in southern Italy and one of the best-documented examples of a diaspora Jewish community on the Italian peninsula. Its mosaics contribute important evidence to the study of late antique art, Jewish iconography, and the multicultural character of the Roman and early Byzantine Mediterranean world.

Getting there
Bova Marina is located on the SS106 Ionica coastal road near the southern tip of Calabria, approximately 50 km south of Reggio Calabria. The nearest railway station is at Bova Marina on the Ionian coast line. By car, follow the SS106 south from Reggio Calabria; the site is signposted from the town centre.
